Heart It was Sunday, September 3, 2023, when my phone rang. On the other end of the line was a soft-spoken voice filled with urgency. A bride named Chinwe asked if I was a wedding planner—and more importantly, if I was available on September 21st. I paused. That was just over two weeks away.

I asked how I could help. She explained, with quiet desperation, that she had paid another planner in full—but that planner had since stopped responding to all her messages. She was devastated, overwhelmed, and running out of time. I was already working with a couple of other brides, but I didn’t hesitate. I told her, “Yes—I’ll help you.”
She shared that her wedding was set to take place at the Crane Club at Tesoro, with about 130 guests—many of them traveling all the way from Nigeria, including the leader of her village. This wasn’t just a wedding—it was a culturally significant celebration. I promised her, “You will have the wedding of your dreams.”

From that moment on, I hit the ground running. I contacted every vendor she had booked, gathered contracts, reviewed all the details, and crafted a timeline to bring it all together. I took care of the seating chart, RSVP tracking, food selections—everything that had fallen through the cracks. It was a race against time, but every step was fueled by passion and purpose.
The night before the rehearsal, I asked her to try on her custom-made dress, which had been shipped in from England. Amid the chaos of everything else, another frantic call came through—the dress didn’t fit.

With no time to waste, I reached out to a trusted seamstress, who miraculously fit Chinwe in right away and altered the gown within a few hours. By the time she tried it on again, it fit like it was made for her all over again.

The ceremony was absolutely beautiful—filled with emotion, culture, and joy. But it was the reception that truly took my breath away. One of the most memorable moments was the traditional ceremony where the bride sought out the groom and brought him to her father for approval. The expressions on the staff’s faces, many of whom had never witnessed such a rich cultural tradition, were full of wonder and respect.

It was a perfect evening. Every detail came together with intention, and love filled the air.
The gratitude expressed by the couple was so profound, it left a lasting imprint on my heart. This wedding wasn’t just about saving the day—it was about honoring tradition, building trust, and creating something unforgettable, even in the face of chaos.

Heart It was an unusually warm spring morning when I received the phone call. The voice on the other end belonged to the parents of a soon-to-be bride, and they were calling to discuss the wedding plans for their daughter, Ashton. The wedding was going to be a grand affair in Jacksonville, Florida, at the family church—an institution where Ashton had been a devoted member for her entire life. I could already feel the weight of the tradition and the significance of the ceremony from the very first words they spoke. Ashton had dreamed of this day since she was a little girl, and her family wanted everything to be perfect.

Naturally, I was eager to dive into the details, and we set up a Zoom meeting to go over the specifics of the ceremony. The bride-to-be and her fiancé, Harley, lived in Gainesville, Florida, a few hours away from Jacksonville, but they were both deeply connected to the church and the community. I had heard wonderful things about them both, but little did I know, the story I was about to hear would turn out to be far more unique than I had ever imagined.

Our first meeting started off with the usual pleasantries—Ashton shared her vision for the wedding, describing how she wanted to incorporate elements of their shared faith and their love for nature into the ceremony. But it was when we started discussing the groom, Harley, that things took an unexpected turn.
As Ashton and Harley spoke about their relationship, Ashton mentioned something in passing that caught my attention. “Harley is high-functioning autistic,” she said, her voice full of warmth and understanding. “It’s something that makes him who he is, and I love him for it. He’s such a special person.”
I felt an immediate sense of appreciation for Ashton's openness, and I knew that understanding Harley's perspective and his unique way of looking at the world would be crucial in helping to craft a ceremony that truly reflected their bond.

As the conversation unfolded, I learned more about the couple's journey together. They had met at university, where Ashton had been studying psychology and Harley had been working toward a degree in industrial arts. Despite their different academic pursuits, they had an undeniable connection that had only grown stronger over time.
But it was something Harley had done for Ashton that really stood out—something that would make their wedding day even more special. Ashton's eyes sparkled as she shared the story with me.
“As a surprise for me,” she began, “Harley did something completely unexpected. For our wedding rings, he ordered actual gold bars. He then melted them down and handcrafted our rings himself.”
I was taken aback by this gesture. It wasn’t just the physical act of making the rings; it was the thoughtfulness behind it. Harley had taken something so personal—his own time, effort, and resources—and used his skills and creativity to craft something that would symbolize their love in a way no one else could. For someone on the autism spectrum, this kind of intricate, hands-on work was a testament to his dedication and his deep connection with Ashton.
Ashton continued, “It’s his way of showing me that he’s willing to put everything into our future. The rings aren’t just a symbol of commitment; they’re a physical manifestation of everything we’ve built together.”

As I sat there listening to Ashton speak, I was deeply moved by the sincerity of their relationship. Harley's gesture—so thoughtful and personal—spoke volumes about the kind of man he was. It wasn’t about grand gestures for the sake of impressing others; it was about honoring his love for Ashton in the way that felt most true to him. The fact that he had taken the time to handcraft their wedding rings was, in itself, an act of vulnerability and trust.

I knew that planning their wedding would be an incredible privilege. It wasn’t just about organizing a beautiful ceremony; it was about telling their story in a way that felt authentic and true to who they were as individuals and as a couple. I could already envision how the ceremony would unfold, how Ashton would walk down the aisle in her beautiful gown, and how Harley—wearing his handmade ring—would wait for her with a look of pure love and anticipation.

As our Zoom call ended, I felt a deep sense of excitement for the journey ahead. It wasn’t going to be a typical wedding. No, this one would be something truly special—something that celebrated not just love, but the unique ways in which people connect, communicate, and express themselves.

And I couldn’t wait to be part of it. --- Alla
